Le Mepris (Contempt)
Le Mepris is a film directed by Jean-Luc Godard.
As I watched the film, I got bored because I didn’t quite understand the story or what is it about. And at the end, the film left me hanging. I appreciate the camera movements, the shots and the editing. The techniques of Godard in the film helped to shock me and left me grasping for answers in the end. I noticed some of the parts that have noticeable cuts which distracted me from the story. Like the part where Camille and the other guy crashed into a big truck and died. They didn’t show how did it all happened. It just focused on the part where they are already dead in the car.
I think it was distracting but I came to realize that Godard did these techniques so that the audience will think deeper about the cinematic concepts.
There are different language used in the film – French, English, Italian and German. I think it’s cool having different language in this film so that we could feel the story more. The film is like a collage that needs to be understood. It is different from other films because the story is not presented with realistic interpretation of the characters.
I also appreciate the actor’s performance where they place an emotional impact. Godard had a different way in exploiting Camille’s (Brigitte Bardot) looks by showing her naked body but partial, her face, her skin, and her curves.
Godard's film Le Mepris (Contempt) is stuffed with ideas that are invisible and you have to think and analyze it.
